I planted my herbs and veggies from seed and they are GROWING! It’s such a great feeling this time of year to have something green and growing in the basement! And considering the first day of spring has come, it’s exciting to start thinking about planting my 2021 garden.

I have a small room set up in the basement with things I can’t live without during planting season.

  • Grow lights: They aren’t a necessity, especially if you live in a warmer climate or have a window that gets full sun all day but I HIGHLY recommend getting at least one. I have two and it’s completely changed the way I start my seeds. I use them for a 12-hour cycle. 12-hours on, 12-hours off.
  • Seed warming pads: These magical things help keep the soil temperatures higher for the germination process. They are especially important when trying to germinate chile and other pepper seeds because they require a warmer soil temperature. Again, not necessary but they do make your seedlings really pop!
  • Fresh soil: For starting seeds, I always buy new soil. I usually have half-used bags from the year before but I tend to have better luck with germination if I start with a fresh bag. I use the old soil to repot house plants or add them to my garden beds come planting time.
  • Water bottle: It’s nice to have something that pours from a tip so you can direct the water exactly where you want it when watering. Because most seeds are only planted 1/4-inch under the soil, it’s important not to wash away your seed starts before they germinate.
  • Don’t over think it: Tips, tips, tips?!?! WHO CARES?!?!? In the end, people have been gardening for centuries. Put your seeds in some soil, give them light, water, and attention. Experiment and find what works for you.

I started my seeds in early March this year, which is a bit later than normal for me living in central Iowa. I started…

  • Eggplants
  • Tomatoes
  • Kale
  • Chiles
  • Basil
  • Oregano
  • Peppers
  • Scallions
  • Chinese cabbage
Two weeks growth difference. Look at these seedlings grow!
After another week it will be time to repot these veggie starts into their own small vessels to help ensure a strong root system .
