Seed starting update, ya’ll! This is when the gardens really get going here in Zone 5. My artichoke babies are in the basement vernalizing. Leeks and onions are also in the basement enjoying the cool temps. I’ve got celery, parsley, and basil under my upstairs lights, along with just-sprouted peppers and eggplant.

Today I planted some of my favorite brassicas: broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts. As soon as they are all up and growing, I’ll move them to either my cold frame outside or the basement, depend on the crazy Iowa weather. There they can get strong and hardy before they go into the garden. Here are the varieties I planted:

  • Alcosa cabbage
  • Perfection Savoy cabbage
  • Hestia Brussels sprouts
  • Optiko Chinese Cabbage
  • Snow Crown cauliflower
  • Gypsy broccoli
